In this closing fireside chat, Helen Oro, an internationally renowned designer from Pelican Lake
First Nation, and John Spyglass, a cultural and artistic historian from Mosquito Grizzly Bears
Head Lean Man First Nation, will join moderator Michaella Shannon to explore the intersections
of Indigenous traditions, innovation, and values in the fashion industry. The discussion will focus
on how these elements, technological advancements, and sustainable practices can shape a
more inclusive and accessible fashion industry.

Helen will share how her work with Helen Oro Designs blends traditional beadwork with modern
fashion, creating space for Indigenous culture within the global fashion industry, while mentoring
emerging Indigenous creators. John Spyglass will provide a cultural historian’s perspective on
how Indigenous design and artifacts continue to inspire contemporary fashion, ensuring that
traditions are preserved even as the industry evolves. Together, they will address the vital issue
of protecting Indigenous intellectual property and navigating the challenges of cultural
appropriation.

The conversation will also focus on supporting the professional development of Indigenous
creators, influencers, and distributors. Helen and John will explore practical strategies for
empowering Indigenous professionals, providing access to resources, mentorship, and
innovative tools that foster long-term success and growth in the industry.
This closing session promises to leave attendees with a compelling vision of how sustainability,
technology, and Indigenous traditions can come together to build a fashion industry that uplifts
Indigenous voices and honours their contributions to the design world.
